Sesame Street webinar tackles addiction struggle for parents, families

WTOV9 | Fox (8/25/20)

Sesame Street has launched a web series to help families dealing with addiction, to offer resources and strategies a child and family therapist may use in their work with families.

On Thursday, August 26, DisposeRx will partner with Sesame Street in Communities to lead the second webinar in its series titled, "Parental Addiction: Healing Families Together."

Child and family therapist, Jerry Moe, the national director of the Hazelden Betty Ford Children's Program, will offer resources and strategies that family therapists may use in their work with families. Moe will explore resources from the Parental Addiction topic page and offer ways a therapist (or any provider) could use them in their own work with children and families, the webinar organizers stated in a news release.

"When a family member struggles with addiction, the whole family struggles. Children often think it’s their fault; they feel shame, embarrassment, guilt, and loneliness; they may feel invisible. It takes special effort to start important conversations and answer children’s questions. But parents, teachers, caregivers, and other caring adults can comfort children and guide them through difficult moments. With love and support, the family can cope with the challenges of addiction together," the Sesame Street in Communities page explained.

The new series is expanding an existing initiative, Sesame Street in Communities, to help children "overcome the trauma of parental addiction." It's aimed at child and family therapists, first responders, community leaders and other providers. Kids will have access to videos, activity sheets (meant for young children and adults) and other educational resources, all of which are free and in both English and Spanish....

The remaining two webinars will be released monthly: September 30 – Jac Charlier, executive director of the Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities (TASC) Center for Health and Justice will build awareness and provide new approaches for first responders.
